प्रयान्तं नैरृतपतिं नार्यो मदिरलोचनाः ।
बहुमानाच्च कामाच्च प्रिया भार्यास्तमन्वयुः ।

Prayāntaṃ nairṛtapatiṃ nāryo madiralocanāḥ |
Bahumānācca kāmācca priyā bhāryāstamanvayuḥ ॥5-18-18॥
Translation
As the Lord of the Nairritas (Rakshasas) departed, those women with intoxicating eyes followed him. Those beloved wives followed him out of great respect and deep desire.
हिंदी अनुवाद
प्रस्थान करते हुए उस राक्षसराज (नैरृतपतिं) के पीछे-पीछे वे मदिरा जैसी नशीली आँखों वाली (मदिरलोचनाः) स्त्रियाँ चल पड़ीं। वे प्रिय पत्नियाँ अत्यधिक आदर (बहुमानाच्च) और प्रेम (कामाच्च) के कारण उसका अनुगमन कर रही थीं।
English Commentary
This verse offers insight into Ravana's domestic standing. Though a terrifying demon king (nairṛtapati), he commands not just fear, but genuine bahumāna (high respect) and kāma (love/desire) from his wives. This dual motivation for following him humanizes the antagonist, showing him as a figure capable of inspiring devotion in his own household. The epithet madiralocanāḥ (having eyes like wine/intoxicating eyes) reinforces the sensual atmosphere of the Sundara Kanda. It establishes the grandeur of Ravana’s procession, contrasting the devotion of his lawfully wedded wives with his illicit and unreciprocated obsession with Sita, which drives the tragic narrative forward.
