कामदर्पमदैर्युक्तं जिह्मताम्रायतेक्षणम् ।
समक्षमिव कन्दर्पमपविद्धशरासनम् ।

Kāmadarpaṃ madairyuktaṃ jihmatāmrāyatekṣaṇam |
Samakṣamiva kandarpamapaviddhaśarāsanam ॥5-18-23॥
Translation
He was filled with lust, pride, and intoxication. His wide eyes were crooked (sly) and copper-red. He appeared like the God of Love (Kandarpa) himself, present in person, but without his bow.
हिंदी अनुवाद
वह काम, घमंड और मद (नशे) से युक्त था। उसकी बड़ी-बड़ी आँखें (ईक्षणम्) कुटिल (जिह्म) और लाल (ताम्र) थीं। वह साक्षात् कामदेव (कन्दर्प) जैसा लग रहा था, जिसने अपना धनुष त्याग दिया हो।
English Commentary
This verse is a masterpiece of character description. Ravana is possessed by a toxic triad: kāma (lust), darpa (vanity), and mada (arrogance/intoxication). His eyes reflect his inner state—jihma (crooked/deceitful) and tāmra (red with rage or wine). Yet, surprisingly, he is compared to Kandarpa (the God of Love) manifest. The qualifier apaviddhaśarāsanam (with bow cast aside) implies he is in a mode of seduction rather than war. This comparison underscores that evil in the Ramayana is not always ugly; Ravana is physically magnificent and god-like in appearance, which makes his sinister intentions all the more dangerous and deceptive.

वाल्मीकि रावण के विरोधाभासी स्वरूप का अद्भुत वर्णन करते हैं। एक ओर वह 'कामदर्पमदैर्युक्तं' (काम, अहंकार और मद से भरा) है और उसकी आँखें 'जिह्म' (कुटिल) तथा 'ताम्र' (क्रोध/नशे से लाल) हैं, जो उसके आसुरी स्वभाव को दर्शाती हैं। दूसरी ओर, शारीरिक रूप से वह इतना आकर्षक है कि उसकी तुलना 'कन्दर्प' (कामदेव) से की गई है। 'अपविद्धशरासनम्' (धनुष रहित) विशेषण महत्वपूर्ण है—यह सूचित करता है कि वह युद्ध के लिए नहीं, बल्कि प्रेम-याचना के लिए आया है। यह उपमा रावण की शारीरिक सुंदरता और उसके नैतिक पतन के बीच के द्वंद्व को गहरा करती है।
