Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
ताभिः परिवृतो राजा सुरूपाभिर्महायशाः ।
तस्मृगद्विजसम्ठष्टं प्रविष्टः प्रमदावनम् ।

Tābhiḥ parivṛto rājā surūpābhirmahāyaśāḥ |
Tasmṛgadvijasamghaṣṭaṃ praviṣṭaḥ pramadāvanam ॥5-18-27॥
Translation
Surrounded by those beautiful women, the highly renowned King entered that Pramadavana (pleasure garden), which was resounding with the sounds of deer and birds.

उन सुंदर रूप वाली (सुरूपाभिः) स्त्रियों से घिरा हुआ वह महायशस्वी राजा (रावण), उस प्रमदावन (अशोक वाटिका के उद्यान) में प्रविष्ट हुआ, जो मृगों और पक्षियों की ध्वनियों से गूँज रहा था (मृगद्विजसंघुष्टम्)।
English Commentary
Ravana enters the Pramadavana (literally, the garden of young women/pleasure garden). He is paradoxically called mahāyaśāḥ (of great renown), reminding the reader of his status as a legendary conqueror, not a common thug. He is surrounded by beauty, both human (his wives) and natural (the garden). The compound mṛgadvijasamghuṣṭam (resounding with deer and birds) paints an auditory picture of the garden, which was likely disturbed by the sudden entry of the torch-bearing procession. This verse sets the stage for the confrontation in the garden, juxtaposing the "Great Renown" of Ravana with his shameful intent towards Sita.

रावण 'प्रमदावन' (स्त्रियों के लिए उद्यान/अशोक वाटिका) में प्रवेश करता है। उसे 'महायशाः' (महान यश वाला) कहा गया है, जो उसके पूर्व में अर्जित तप और विजयों का संकेत है, भले ही वर्तमान कर्म निंदनीय हैं। 'मृगद्विजसंघुष्टम्' (पशु-पक्षियों के कोलाहल से युक्त) विशेषण उद्यान की सजीवता को दर्शाता है। रावण का प्रवेश एक राजा की भांति है, जो अपनी रानियों ('सुरूपाभिः') से घिरा हुआ है। यहाँ प्रमदावन का सौंदर्य और वहाँ का प्राकृतिक कोलाहल रावण के मन की अशांति और काम-कोलाहल का एक प्राकृतिक प्रतिबिंब भी प्रतीत होता है।
