रावणोऽयम् महाबाहुरिति संचिन्त्य वानरः ।
अवप्लुतो महातेजा हनुमान्मारुतात्मजः ।

Rāvaṇo'yam mahābāhuriti saṃcintya vānaraḥ |
Avapluto mahātejā hanumānmārutātmajaḥ ॥5-18-30॥
Translation
"This is the mighty-armed Ravana," reflecting thus, the highly radiant monkey Hanuman, son of the Wind God, shrank back (hid himself deeper).

"यह महाबाहु रावण ही है," ऐसा विचार करके महातेजस्वी वायुपुत्र वानर हनुमान (पत्तों की आड़ में) छिप गए (या पीछे हट गए)।
English Commentary
Hanuman confirms the identity of the intruder: "This is Ravana" (Rāvaṇo'yam). The epithet mahābāhu (mighty-armed) acknowledges the physical threat Ravana poses. Upon this realization, Hanuman performs a strategic action described as avaplutaḥ. While often meaning "jumped down," in this context of stealth, it implies shrinking back or concealing himself more deeply within the foliage to avoid detection. Despite being mahātejā (radiant/powerful), the Mārutātmaja (Son of Wind) chooses prudence over confrontation. He knows that the mission requires gathering intelligence on Ravana's interaction with Sita rather than an immediate fight.

हनुमान जी ने पूर्व में रावण को शयनकक्ष में सोते हुए देखा था, इसलिए वे उसे पहचानते हैं। 'महाबाहु' (विशाल भुजाओं वाला) विशेषण रावण की शारीरिक शक्ति की पुष्टि करता है। 'अवप्लुतो' शब्द यहाँ महत्वपूर्ण है; इसका अर्थ कूदना भी होता है, लेकिन संदर्भानुसार यहाँ इसका अर्थ 'सिमट जाना' या 'गहराई में छिप जाना' है। रावण के प्रत्यक्ष आगमन पर हनुमान जी अपनी उपस्थिति को गुप्त रखने के लिए अधिक सतर्क हो जाते हैं। यह उनकी बुद्धिमत्ता का परिचायक है—शत्रु के सामने आने पर आवेग में न आकर, वे स्थिति का निरीक्षण करने के लिए धैर्यपूर्वक छिपने का विकल्प चुनते हैं।
