Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
विबुध्य तु यथाकालम् राक्षसेन्द्रः प्रतापवान् ।
स्रस्तमाल्याम्बरधरो वैदेहीमन्वचिन्तयात् ।

vibudhya tu yathākālam rākṣasendraḥ pratāpavān |
srastamālyāmbaradharo vaidehīmanvacintayāt ॥5-18-4॥
Translation
Having awakened at the proper time, that powerful Lord of Rakshasas, with his garlands and garments slipped (in disarray), turned his thoughts toward Vaidehi.

ठीक समय पर जागकर, वह प्रतापी राक्षसेराज (रावण), जिसके गले की माला और वस्त्र (नींद के कारण) अस्त-व्यस्त थे, वैदेही (सीता) का चिंतन करने लगा।
English Commentary
This verse reveals Ravana's psychological state immediately upon waking. Despite being the pratāpavān (majestic/powerful) King of Rakshasas who wakes up punctually (yathākālam), his mind is not on his kingdom or duties. Instead, he immediately thinks of Vaidehi (vaidehīmanvacintayāt). The description of him with slipped garlands and garments (srastamālyāmbaradharo) adds a touch of erotic disarray or perhaps the lingering effects of sleep/intoxication. This obsession signifies his tragic flaw. The narrative pivot is clear: the mighty king is enslaved by his lust, and his next action will inevitably be to seek out Sita, setting up the encounter Hanuman is about to witness.

रावण के जागने के बाद का प्रथम विचार ही उसकी आसक्ति को दर्शाता है। 'यथाकालम्' (नियत समय पर) जागना उसकी अनुशासित दिनचर्या बताता है। वह 'प्रतापवान्' (प्रभावशाली) है, किन्तु जागते ही, जब उसके वस्त्र और मालाएँ अस्त-व्यस्त हैं ('स्रस्तमाल्याम्बरधरो'), उसका मन सीधे 'वैदेहीमन्वचिन्तयात्' (वैदेही के चिंतन में) लग जाता है। यह कामुक्ता और सीता के प्रति उसके जुनून को रेखांकित करता है। एक राजा को जागते ही राज्य की चिंता होनी चाहिए, परन्तु रावण पराई स्त्री के मोह में ग्रस्त है। यही उसके 'प्रताप' के नाश का कारण बनेगा। यह श्लोक कथा को आगे बढ़ाता है कि अब रावण अशोक वाटिका की ओर प्रस्थान करेगा।
