तृणमन्तरतः कृत्वा प्रत्युवाच शुचिस्मिता ।
निवर्तय मनो मत्तः स्वजने क्रियतां मनः ।

Tṛṇamantarataḥ kṛtvā pratyuvāca śucismitā |
Nivartaya mano mattaḥ svajane kriyatāṃ manaḥ ॥5-19-3॥
Translation
Placing a blade of grass between them, she of the pure smile spoke: "Turn your mind away from me; fix your mind on your own people (wives)."
हिंदी अनुवाद
अपने और रावण के बीच एक तिनका रखकर (तृणमन्तरतः कृत्वा), वह पवित्र मुस्कान वाली (शुचिस्मिता) बोली: "टर्न योर माइंड अवे फ्रम मी ऐंड फिक्स योर माइंड आन योर ओन पीपल (वाइव्स)।"
English Commentary
This is an iconic moment. Sita places a blade of grass (tṛṇam) between herself and Ravana. This act is multifaceted: it serves as a physical barrier for a Pativrata who avoids direct contact with other men; it symbolizes that Ravana is as worthless as straw to her; and it represents her weapon, implying she could burn him to ashes but restrains herself to this grass. Surprisingly, she is called śucismitā (of pure/bright smile). This smile signifies her moral superiority and lack of guilt. Her command is direct and authoritative: "Withdraw your mind from me."

यह रामायण का एक अत्यंत प्रसिद्ध और प्रतीकात्मक श्लोक है। 'तृणमन्तरतः कृत्वा' (तिनके को बीच में रखकर) के कई अर्थ हैं: 1. सीता परपुरुष को सीधा नहीं देखतीं (मर्यादा)। 2. रावण उनके लिए तिनके के समान तुच्छ है। 3. यह तिनका उनकी लक्ष्मण रेखा या सुरक्षा कवच का प्रतीक है। उन्हें 'शुचिस्मिता' (पवित्र मुस्कान वाली) कहा गया है—जो भय के बीच भी उनके आत्मविश्वास और नैतिक श्रेष्ठता को दर्शाता है, या यह रावण की मूर्खता पर एक व्यंग्यात्मक मुस्कान हो सकती है। वह स्पष्ट उपदेश देती हैं: 'निवर्तय मनो मत्तः' (मुझसे मन हटा लो)।
