Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
समासाद्य च लक्ष्मीवन् लङ्कां रावणपालिताम् ।
परिखाभिः सपद्माभिः सोत्पलाभिरलंकृताम् ॥ ॥५-२-१४॥
Samāsādya ca lakṣmīvan laṅkāṃ rāvaṇapālitām । Parikhābhiḥ sapadmābhiḥ sotpalābhiralaṃkṛtām ॥ ॥5-2-14॥
Translation
Meaning: Approaching the Ravana-ruled Lanka, the glorious Hanuman saw the city adorned with moats filled with lotuses and lilies.
हिंदी अनुवाद
अर्थ: (वनों को पार कर) शोभायमान हनुमान रावण द्वारा पालित लंका के समीप पहुँचे, जो कमलों और नीलकमलों से युक्त खाइयों (परिखा) से अलंकृत थी।
English Commentary
Commentary: Hanuman reaches the immediate perimeter of the city. The verse describes the parikhā (moats). Unlike typical defensive moats filled only with dangerous creatures, these are alaṃkṛtām (adorned) with lotuses and lilies, blending aesthetics with defense. This reflects the immense wealth and refined taste of Ravana (Rāvaṇapālitām). Hanuman is described as Lakṣmīvan (possessed of fortune/splendor), suggesting he is spiritually equipped to handle the grandeur and the danger he is approaching.

टिप्पणी: अब हनुमान जी नगर की बाहरी रक्षा-पंक्ति, यानी 'परिखा' (Moat) के पास पहुँचते हैं। साधारणतः खाइयाँ भयावह होती हैं और उनमें मगरमच्छ आदि होते हैं, किन्तु लंका की खाइयाँ भी 'सपद्माभिः' (कमलों से युक्त) और 'अलंकृताम्' (सजी हुई) थीं। यह 'रावणपालिताम्' (रावण द्वारा सुरक्षित/पालित) नगरी के वैभव को दर्शाता है जहाँ सुरक्षात्मक संरचनाओं को भी सौंदर्य प्रदान किया गया था। हनुमान जी के लिए 'लक्ष्मीवान्' (शोभायुक्त/श्रीसंपन्न) शब्द का प्रयोग उनकी सफलता और आत्मविश्वास को दर्शाता है।
