सीतापहरणार्थेन रावणेन सुरक्षिताम् ।
समन्ताद्विचरद्भिश्च राक्षसैरुग्रधन्विभिः ॥ ॥५-२-१५॥
Sītāpaharaṇārthena rāvaṇena surakṣitām । Samantādvicaradbhiśca rākṣasairugradhanvibhiḥ ॥ ॥5-2-15॥
Translation
Meaning: He saw the city well-guarded by Ravana on account of Sita's abduction, with terrible archer-demons patrolling all around.

अर्थ: सीता के अपहरण के कारण रावण द्वारा भली-भाँति सुरक्षित की गई उस नगरी को (देखा), जहाँ चारों ओर भयानक धनुष धारण किए हुए राक्षस विचरण कर रहे थे।
English Commentary
Commentary: The tone shifts from scenic beauty to military tension. Valmiki explicitly states the reason for the heightened security: Sītāpaharaṇārthena (because of the abduction of Sita). Ravana, anticipating retaliation, has fortified the city. The presence of ugradhanvibhiḥ (rakshasas with fierce bows) patrolling samantāt (all around) underscores that entering Lanka is not merely a physical feat but a tactical challenge. This verse reminds the reader of the casus belli and the danger lurking beneath the beautiful exterior.
