कैलासशिखरप्रख्यामालिखन्तीमिवाम्बरम् ।
डीयमानामिवाकाशमुच्छ्रितैर्भवनोत्तमैः ॥ ॥५-२-२३॥
Kailāsaśikharaprakhyāmālikhantīmivāmbaram । Ḍīyamānāmivākāśamucchritairbhavanottamaiḥ ॥ ॥5-2-23॥
Translation
Meaning: Resembling the peak of Mount Kailash, it seemed to be scraping the sky and flying into the heavens with its lofty, excellent mansions.

अर्थ: (वह नगरी) कैलास पर्वत के शिखर के समान थी, जो आकाश को स्पर्श करती सी प्रतीत होती थी और अपने ऊँचे श्रेष्ठ भवनों के कारण आकाश में उड़ती सी लग रही थी।
English Commentary
Commentary: Valmiki compares Lanka to the peak of Kailasa, evoking images of sacredness, height, and whiteness. The verb ālikhantīm (scratching/touching) regarding the sky is a vivid precursor to the modern concept of "skyscrapers." The illusion that the city is ḍīyamānām (flying) due to its height emphasizes the vertical dominance of Ravana's architecture. It suggests a kingdom that has severed ties with the ordinary earth to claim the heavens.

टिप्पणी: लंका की ऊँचाई और सफेदी की तुलना भगवान शिव के निवास 'कैलास' से की गई है। 'आलिखन्तीमिवाम्बरम्' (आकाश को खुरचती/लिखती हुई) एक बहुत ही सुंदर अतिशयोक्ति है, जो आज के 'Skyscraper' (गगनचुंबी) शब्द के भाव को प्रकट करती है। भवनों की ऊँचाई के कारण नगरी 'डीयमानाम्' (उड़ती हुई) लगती है। यह उपमाएँ रावण के अहंकार और उसकी नगरी की अभ्रंलिह (sky-touching) भव्यता को दर्शाती हैं।
