Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
यावज्जानामि वैदेहीं यदि जीवति वा न वा ।
तत्रैव चिन्तयिष्यामि दृष्ट्वा तां जनकात्मजाम् ॥ ॥५-२-३१॥
Yāvaj jānāmi vaidehīṃ yadi jīvati vā na vā । Tatraiva cintayiṣyāmi dṛṣṭvā tāṃ janakātmajām ॥ ॥5-2-31॥
Translation
(Hanuman thought) As long as I do not know whether Vaidehi (Sita) is alive or not, I shall think about that matter (conquering Lanka) only after seeing that daughter of Janaka.
हिंदी अनुवाद
अर्थ: (हनुमान ने सोचा) जब तक मैं यह न जान लूं कि वैदेही (सीता) जीवित हैं भी या नहीं; (तब तक युद्ध की चिंता छोड़कर) उस जनकनन्दिनी को देखने के बाद ही मैं उस विषय (युद्ध/लंका विजय) में विचार करूँगा।
English Commentary
This verse illustrates Hanuman's ability to prioritize amidst overwhelming odds. While the strategic impossibility of a siege was weighing on his mind, he quickly recalibrates. The primary objective is intelligence gathering: confirming the status of the hostage (Hostage Proof of Life). The phrase yadi jīvati vā na vā (whether she lives or not) reveals the grim reality of the situation. Hanuman decides to suspend grand military planning until the immediate tactical goal—locating Janaka's daughter—is achieved.

टिप्पणी: यह श्लोक हनुमान जी की प्राथमिकता (Prioritization) को स्पष्ट करता है। पिछले श्लोकों में वे लंका की अभेद्यता और वानर सेना की कठिनाइयों पर विचार कर रहे थे। परन्तु तुरंत ही वे स्वयं को मुख्य लक्ष्य पर वापस लाते हैं—सीता की खोज। 'जीवति वा न वा' (जीवित हैं या नहीं) यह आशंका उनके मन में इसलिए है क्योंकि रावण अत्यंत क्रूर है। वे निर्णय लेते हैं कि "मिशन का उद्देश्य" पहले पूरा होना चाहिए, "मिशन की विधि" (युद्ध) बाद में तय होगी। यह एक कर्मठ सेवक की एकाग्रता का परिचायक है।
