Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अर्थानर्थान्तरे बुद्धिर्निश्चितापि न शोभते ।
घातयन्ति हि कार्याणि दूताः पण्डितमानिनः ॥ ॥५-२-४०॥
Arthānarthāntare buddhirniścitāpi na śobhate । Ghātayanti hi kāryāṇi dūtāḥ paṇḍitamāninaḥ ॥ ॥5-2-40॥
Translation
Even a decided intellect regarding what is advantageous and disadvantageous does not shine (succeed) if the messengers are arrogant (thinking themselves wise); for such messengers ruin the tasks.
हिंदी अनुवाद
अर्थ: अर्थ (लाभ) और अनर्थ (हानि) के विषय में निश्चय करने वाली बुद्धि भी शोभा नहीं देती (विफल हो जाती है), यदि दूत 'पण्डितमानी' (स्वयं को विद्वान मानने वाले/घमंडी) हों, क्योंकि वे कार्य को नष्ट कर देते हैं।
English Commentary
Hanuman warns against intellectual arrogance. Even a plan that carefully weighs pros and cons (artha-anartha) can collapse if the operative executing it is a paṇḍitamāninaḥ—someone who thinks they are wise but lacks true wisdom (hubris). Such arrogant agents often deviate from instructions or make rash decisions, destroying the mission (ghātayanti hi kāryāṇi). Hanuman resolves to remain humble and alert, avoiding the trap of thinking he knows better than the mission demands.

टिप्पणी: यह दूत-कर्म (Diplomacy/Espionage) पर बहुत बड़ी सीख है। 'पण्डितमानिनः' वे लोग हैं जो वास्तव में बुद्धिमान नहीं हैं, पर खुद को बहुत होशियार समझते हैं (Oversmart)। ऐसे दूत अपनी डेढ़-होशियारी में स्वामी की योजना बिगाड़ देते हैं। हनुमान जी सोच रहे हैं कि उन्हें अति-आत्मविश्वास से बचना होगा और केवल आदेशानुसार तथा परिस्थिति अनुसार ही विवेक का प्रयोग करना होगा, न कि अहंकार का।
