इहाहं यदि तिष्ठामि स्वेन रूपेण संवृतः ।
विनाशमुपयास्यामि भर्तुरर्थश्च हीयते ॥ ॥५-२-४५॥
Ihāhaṃ yadi tiṣṭhāmi svena rūpeṇa saṃvṛtaḥ । Vināśamupayāsyāmi bharturarthaśca hīyate ॥ ॥5-2-45॥
Translation
If I remain here covering myself in my own (natural) form, I shall meet with destruction, and the purpose of my Lord (Rama) will be defeated.
हिंदी अनुवाद
यदि मैं यहाँ अपने वास्तविक (विशाल वानर) रूप में रहता हूँ, तो मैं विनाश को प्राप्त होऊँगा और मेरे स्वामी (श्री राम) का कार्य भी नष्ट (असफल) हो जाएगा।
English Commentary
This verse encapsulates the dilemma of the operative: the risk of exposure versus the mission objective. Hanuman realizes that retaining his massive, natural form (svena rūpeṇa) is a liability. While he is capable of combat, fighting is not his current objective. If he is engaged in battle and killed or captured, the primary mission—finding Sita—fails. The phrase bharturarthaśca hīyate (the Lord's purpose will be lost) shows his total dedication to Rama. He understands that a pyrrhic victory in combat is a strategic defeat for the mission. This reasoning leads him to the conclusion that he must suppress his natural grandeur to serve the higher cause.

हनुमान जी यहाँ 'कार्य-सिद्धि' को अपने 'अहंकार' या 'स्वरूप' से ऊपर रखते हैं। यह एक आदर्श सेवक और भक्त का लक्षण है। 'स्वेन रूपेण' (अपने निज रूप में) रहने पर खतरा यह है कि राक्षस उन पर समूह में आक्रमण करेंगे। यद्यपि हनुमान उन्हें हराने में सक्षम हैं, तथापि युद्ध होने से सीता की खोज का मूल उद्देश्य (भर्तुरर्थः) बाधित हो जाएगा। यहाँ 'अर्थ' का तात्पर्य 'प्रयोजन' या 'लक्ष्य' से है। हनुमान जी जानते हैं कि यदि दूत मारा गया या पकड़ा गया, तो राम का अभियान रुक जाएगा। इसलिए, वे आत्म-रक्षा को केवल इसलिए महत्व दे रहे हैं क्योंकि वह प्रभु-कार्य के लिए आवश्यक है। यह श्लोक वीरता और विवेक का संतुलन है।
