Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
सूर्ये चास्तं गते रात्रौ देहं संक्षिप्य मारुतिः ।
वृषदंशकमात्रः सन् बभूवाद्भुतदर्शनः ॥ ॥५-२-४९॥
Sūrye cāstaṃ gate rātrau dehaṃ saṃkṣipya mārutiḥ । Vṛṣadaṃśakamātraḥ san babhūvādbhutadarśanaḥ ॥ ॥5-2-49॥
Translation
When the sun had set and night fell, Maruti (Hanuman) contracted his body. Becoming the size of a cat, he appeared wonderful/amazing to look at.

सूर्य के अस्त हो जाने पर रात्रि में मारुति (हनुमान) ने अपने शरीर को सिकोड़ लिया और बिल्ली के समान आकार धारण कर वे अद्भुत दर्शन (विचित्र दिखने वाले) हो गए।
English Commentary
The transformation occurs. Upon sunset, Hanuman contracts his massive frame (dehaṃ saṃkṣipya). The term vṛṣadaṃśaka is debated by commentators but is widely accepted in this context to mean a cat or a gadfly; given the architectural exploration that follows, 'cat-sized' is the standard interpretation. This demonstrates his mastery over ashta-siddhi (the eight great powers), specifically anima. The text describes him as adbhutadarśanaḥ (of wonderful appearance), suggesting that even in this diminished size, he radiated a distinct, perhaps divine, energy or that the very act of compression was a marvelous sight.

यहाँ हनुमान जी की योगिक क्रिया का वर्णन है। 'वृषदंशक' शब्द का अर्थ सामान्यतः 'बिल्ली' या 'वन बिलाव' लिया जाता है। पर्वत समान विशाल शरीर को त्यागकर एक छोटे प्राणी का रूप धारण करना 'अणिमा' सिद्धि का प्रत्यक्ष प्रमाण है। वाल्मीकि जी उन्हें 'अद्भुतदर्शनः' कहते हैं, क्योंकि ऐसी शक्ति सामान्य प्राणियों में नहीं होती। एक विशाल वानर का एक बिल्ली के आकार में सिमट जाना एक विलक्षण दृश्य है। यह रूप परिवर्तन केवल आकार का नहीं, बल्कि उनकी शक्ति के घनत्व (density of power) का भी सूचक है—छोटा रूप, परन्तु शक्ति वही अपार।
