Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
शङ्खप्रभं क्षीरमृणालवर्ण ।
मुद्गच्छमानं व्यवभासमानम् ।
ददर्श चन्द्रं स हरिप्रवीरः ।
प्लोप्लूयमानं सरसीव हंसम् ॥५-२-५८॥
śaṅkhaprabhaṃ kṣīramṛṇālavarṇa |
mudgacchamānaṃ vyavabhāsamānam |
dadarśa candraṃ sa haripravīraḥ |
ploplūyamānaṃ sarasīva haṃsam ॥5-2-58॥
Translation
That hero among monkeys (Hanuman) beheld the rising and brilliantly shining Moon, possessing the luster of a conch shell and the color of milk and lotus-fiber, looking like a swan swimming in a lake.
हिंदी अनुवाद
शंख की आभा वाले तथा दूध और मृणाल (कमल-नाल) के समान श्वेत वर्ण वाले, ऊपर उठते हुए और विशेष रूप से चमकते हुए चंद्रमा को वानरवीर हनुमान ने ऐसे देखा, मानो सरोवर में तैरता हुआ कोई हंस हो।
English Commentary
This verse is strictly aesthetic, showcasing the 'Rasa' (literary flavor) of the epic. Valmiki piles simile upon simile—conch, milk, and lotus-fiber—to emphasize the pristine, pure whiteness of the moon. The kinetic imagery of the moon 'swimming' (plopluyamanam) like a swan in the lake of the sky adds a dynamic quality to the description. For a moment, the narrative pauses on pure beauty, suggesting that even amidst a mission of espionage and impending war, the beauty of the world remains constant and observable by a calm mind like Hanuman's.

यह श्लोक वाल्मीकि रामायण की उपमा-सौंदर्य का उत्कृष्ट उदाहरण है। भयानक युद्ध और तनावपूर्ण वातावरण की पृष्ठभूमि में भी कवि सौंदर्यबोध (एस्थेटिक्स) को नहीं त्यागते। चंद्रमा की श्वेतता के लिए तीन उपमान दिए गए हैं: शंख, दूध और मृणाल (कमल की नाल)। आकाश को सरोवर और चंद्रमा को उसमें तैरते हुए हंस (प्लोप्लूयमानं हंसम्) की उपमा देना अत्यंत मनोरम है। यह दृश्य हनुमान जी के मन को क्षणिक शांति प्रदान करता है और सात्विक वातावरण का निर्माण करता है।
