सीताया वचनं श्रुत्वा परुषं राक्षसाधिपः ।
प्रत्युवाच ततः सीतां विप्रियं प्रियदर्शनाम् ।
।
॥५-२०-१॥
sītāyā vacanaṃ śrutvā paruṣaṃ rākṣasādhipaḥ । pratyuvāca tataḥ sītāṃ vipriyaṃ priyadarśanām । । ॥5-20-1॥
Translation
Hearing the harsh words of Sita, the Lord of Rakshasas then spoke unpleasant words to Sita, who was pleasant to look at.
हिंदी अनुवाद
सीता के कठोर वचन सुनकर, राक्षसों के राजा (रावण) ने तब प्रियदर्शन (सुंदर दिखने वाली) सीता को अप्रिय उत्तर दिया।
English Commentary
This verse marks the beginning of Canto 20. Valmiki creates a striking contrast here. Sita is described as priyadarśanām (pleasant to behold), yet her speech is paruṣaṃ (harsh/severe) because of her virtue and anger. Conversely, Ravana, stung by these truths, responds with vipriyaṃ (unpleasant/hateful) words. This juxtaposition highlights the complexity of the scene: Ravana is simultaneously attracted to her beauty and enraged by her fierce rejection and insults.

यहाँ से 20वां सर्ग प्रारंभ होता है। कवि वाल्मीकि यहाँ विरोधाभास (Contrast) का सुंदर प्रयोग करते हैं। सीता के वचन 'परुषं' (कठोर) हैं, लेकिन वह स्वयं 'प्रियदर्शनाम्' (दर्शन में प्रिय/सुंदर) हैं। दूसरी ओर, रावण जो राजा है, वह 'विप्रियं' (अप्रिय/कड़वा) बोलता है। यह श्लोक स्थिति के तनाव को दर्शाता है—सीता की सुंदरता ने रावण को मोहित कर रखा है, लेकिन उनके सत्य और कठोर वचनों ने उसके अहंकार को चोट पहुँचाई है। यह रावण की प्रतिक्रिया की भूमिका है।
