यथा यथा सान्त्वयिता वश्यः स्त्रीणां तथा तथा ।
यथा यथा प्रियं वक्ता परिभूतस्तथा तथा ।
।
॥५-२०-२॥
yathā yathā sāntvayitā vaśyaḥ strīṇāṃ tathā tathā । yathā yathā priyaṃ vaktā paribhūtastathā tathā । । ॥5-20-2॥
Translation
The more one consoles (speaks kindly to) women, the more one comes under their control; and the more one speaks pleasantly, the more one is humiliated/rejected.
हिंदी अनुवाद
जो जितना अधिक सान्त्वना देता है (मीठा बोलता है), वह स्त्रियों के उतना ही वश में होता जाता है; और जो जितना अधिक प्रिय बोलता है, वह उतना ही अधिक तिरस्कृत (अपमानित) होता है।
English Commentary
Ravana expresses a cynical and misogynistic view of relationships, born out of his frustration. He formulates a general rule that kindness (sāntvayitā) towards women leads to being controlled (vaśyaḥ) by them, and speaking pleasantly results in being despised or humiliated (paribhūtaḥ). This reflects his bruised ego; he believes his attempts to woo Sita "gently" (by his standards) have only invited her scorn. It sets the stage for him to justify changing his tactic from persuasion to intimidation.

यह श्लोक रावण की कुंठित मानसिकता और कामुक मनोविज्ञान को दर्शाता है। वह सीता द्वारा किए गए अपने अपमान का विश्लेषण एक सामान्य सिद्धांत (Generalization) के रूप में कर रहा है। उसे लगता है कि उसकी नम्रता और प्रेम-प्रदर्शन को उसकी कमजोरी समझा जा रहा है। 'परिभूतः' का अर्थ है तिरस्कृत होना। रावण का मानना है कि स्त्रियों के साथ कोमलता से नहीं, बल्कि कठोरता से व्यवहार करना चाहिए, क्योंकि दया दिखाने पर वे पुरुष को अपने वश में कर लेती हैं या उसका अपमान करती हैं।
