तां तर्ज्यमानां सम्प्रेक्ष्य राक्षसेन्द्रेण जानकीम् ।
देवगन्धर्वकन्यास्ता विषेदुर्विपुलेक्षणाः ।
।
॥५-२०-१०॥
tāṃ tarjyamānāṃ samprekṣya rākṣasendreṇa jānakīm । devagandharvakanyāstā viṣedurvipulekṣaṇāḥ । । ॥5-20-10॥
Translation
Seeing Janaki being threatened in this manner by the Lord of Rakshasas, the Deva and Gandharva maidens (present there) with large eyes became extremely despondent.
हिंदी अनुवाद
राक्षसराज द्वारा जानकी को इस प्रकार धमकाए जाते हुए देखकर, वहाँ उपस्थित विशाल नेत्रों वाली देव और गंधर्व कन्याएं (जो रावण द्वारा हरण की गई थीं) अत्यंत दुखी हुईं।
English Commentary
This verse reveals that Sita is not the only high-born captive. Other Deva and Gandharva maidens are watching this scene. Their reaction—viṣeduḥ (they became sad/despaired)—shows a collective empathy. They are described as vipulekṣaṇāḥ (wide-eyed), possibly indicating their innocence or their horror at witnessing such brutality. It creates a scene of shared trauma where the other victims silently witness the torment of the newest and most defiant among them.

यहाँ अशोक वाटिका का दृश्य विस्तृत होता है। वहाँ केवल सीता और राक्षसियाँ नहीं हैं, बल्कि रावण द्वारा हरण की गई अन्य देव और गंधर्व कन्याएं भी हैं। 'विपुलेक्षणाः' (बड़ी आँखों वाली) कन्याओं का दुख ('विषेदुः') सीता के प्रति उनकी सहानुभूति को दर्शाता है। वे सीता की पीड़ा को समझती हैं क्योंकि वे भी उसी अत्याचारी की बंदी हैं। यह श्लोक रावण के पापों की व्यापकता को दिखाता है—सीता उसकी एकमात्र शिकार नहीं हैं।
