ताभिराश्वासिता सीता रावणं राक्षसाधिपम् ।
उवाचात्महितं वाक्यं वृत्तशौण्डीर्यगर्वितम् ।
।
॥५-२०-१२॥
tābhir āśvāsitā sītā rāvaṇaṃ rākṣasādhipam । uvāca ātmahitaṃ vākyaṃ vṛttaśauṇḍīryagarvitam । । ॥5-20-12॥
Translation
Consoled by them, Sita spoke words beneficial to herself (her soul/dharma), proud of her virtuous conduct and character, to Ravana, the Lord of Rakshasas.

उन (स्त्रियों) के द्वारा आश्वस्त होकर, सीता ने अपने चरित्र और शील के गर्व से भरकर, राक्षसराज रावण से अपने (आत्मा के) हितकारी वचन कहे।
English Commentary
Bolstered by the silent support of her fellow captives, Sita regains her composure. The phrase vṛttaśauṇḍīryagarvitam is key—it describes her as being proud (garvitam) of the nobility/power (shaundirya) of her conduct (vritta). She is not cowering; she is emboldened by her adherence to Dharma. She speaks words that are ātmahitaṃ—beneficial to the self/soul, implying that standing up for truth is the ultimate good, regardless of the immediate physical danger.

अन्य स्त्रियों के समर्थन से सीता का मनोबल बढ़ता है। यहाँ सीता के लिए 'वृत्तशौण्डीर्यगर्वितम्' विशेषण का प्रयोग बहुत महत्वपूर्ण है। 'वृत्त' का अर्थ है चरित्र/आचरण और 'शौण्डीर्य' का अर्थ है बल/गर्व। सीता को अपने सतीत्व और धर्म पर गर्व है, और इसी गर्व के साथ वह रावण को उत्तर देती हैं। उनके वचन 'आत्महितं' हैं—अर्थात् वे धर्मसम्मत हैं और उनकी आत्मा की रक्षा करने वाले हैं, भले ही वे रावण को क्रोधित क्यों न करें।
