स त्वमिक्ष्वाकुनाथं वै क्षिपन्निह न लज्जसे ।
चक्षुषो विषयं तस्य न तावदुपगच्छसि ।

sa tvamikṣvākunāthaṃ vai kṣipanniha na lajjase |
cakṣuṣo viṣayaṃ tasya na tāvadupagacchasi ॥5-20-17॥
Translation
Are you not ashamed to cast aspersions here upon the Lord of the Ikshvakus? You speak thus only because you have not yet come within the range of his vision.
हिंदी अनुवाद
तुम उन इक्ष्वाकुनाथ (राम) की निंदा करते हुए लज्जित नहीं होते? यह तुम केवल इसलिए कर रहे हो क्योंकि तुम अब तक उनकी दृष्टि के सामने नहीं आए हो।
English Commentary
Sita confronts Ravana’s lack of warrior ethics. She points out the cowardice in insulting a rival who is not present to defend himself. The title 'Lord of the Ikshvakus' reminds Ravana of Rama's illustrious lineage of warriors. The crucial phrase is that Ravana has not yet fallen into Rama's sight (chakshuso vishayam). This implies a grim warning: Ravana’s survival and arrogance are temporary states that exist only because Rama has not yet located him. It foreshadows the inevitability of Ravana's doom the moment he confronts Rama face-to-face.

सीता जी रावण की कायरता को उजागर करती हैं। रावण ने राम की अनुपस्थिति में सीता का हरण किया और अब उनके पीछे उनकी निंदा कर रहा है। सीता स्पष्ट करती हैं कि रावण का यह 'साहस' केवल तब तक है जब तक वह राम के 'चक्षुषो विषयं' (दृष्टि क्षेत्र) से बाहर है। इसका भावार्थ यह है कि जैसे ही राम की दृष्टि रावण पर पड़ेगी, उसका अहंकार और प्राण दोनों संकट में पड़ जाएंगे। यह श्लोक यह भी सिद्ध करता है कि एक सच्चे वीर को पीठ पीछे शत्रु की निंदा करना शोभा नहीं देता, और रावण में उस क्षत्रिय-धर्म का अभाव है।
