तस्य धर्मात्मनः पत्नीं स्नुषां दशरथस्य च ।
कथं व्याहरतो मां ते न जिह्वा पाप शीर्यते ।

tasya dharmātmanaḥ patnīṃ snuṣāṃ daśarathasya ca |
kathaṃ vyāharato māṃ te na jihvā pāpa śīryate ॥5-20-19॥
Translation
Being the wife of that righteous soul and the daughter-in-law of Dasharatha, how is it, O sinner, that your tongue does not fall off while speaking to me?

उस धर्मात्मा (राम) की पत्नी और (महाराज) दशरथ की पुत्रवधु—मुझसे (कुवचन) बोलते हुए, हे पापी! तुम्हारी जीभ कटकर गिर क्यों नहीं जाती?
English Commentary
Sita invokes her high familial status to elevate her rebuke. She is not just an individual; she represents the honor of the righteous Rama and the illustrious King Dasharatha. Speaking inappropriately to a woman of such standing is an assault on Dharma itself. She questions why Ravana's tongue does not wither or fall off (shiryate) while uttering such solicitations. This rhetorical question emphasizes that his speech is so venomous and sinful that it violates the sanctity of the moral order, warranting immediate physical destruction of the organ committing the sin.

सीता जी यहाँ अपने कुल और संबंधों का गौरव स्मरण कराती हैं। वह केवल राम की पत्नी ही नहीं, बल्कि सत्यप्रतिज्ञ राजा दशरथ की 'स्नुषा' (बहु) भी हैं। रघुकुल की प्रतिष्ठा इतनी उच्च है कि उस कुल की स्त्री से अभद्र बात करना मृत्यु को आमंत्रण देने समान है। सीता जी रावण को 'पाप' (पापी) संबोधित करती हैं। यहाँ 'जिह्वा शीर्यते' (जीभ का गिरना) का उल्लेख पुनः इस बात पर बल देता है कि रावण का कृत्य इतना निंदनीय है कि उसका शरीर स्वयं दंडित होना चाहिए। यह सीता के आत्म-सम्मान और अपने श्वसुर-कुल के प्रति निष्ठा का परिचायक है।
