असन्देशात्तु रामस्य तपसश्चानुपालनात् ।
न त्वां कुर्मि दशग्रीव भस्म भस्मार्हतेजसा ।

asandeśāttu rāmasya tapasaścānupālanāt |
na tvāṃ kurmi daśagrīva bhasma bhasmārhatejasā ॥5-20-20॥
Translation
O Ten-headed One! Only due to the absence of a mandate from Rama and to preserve my own ascetic merit, I do not reduce you to ashes, though I possess the blazing energy to do so.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे दशग्रीव! केवल राम का आदेश (सन्देश) न होने के कारण और अपने तप की रक्षा करने के लिए, मैं तुम्हें भस्म करने योग्य तेज रखते हुए भी भस्म नहीं कर रही हूँ।
English Commentary
This is a definitive verse establishing Sita’s agency and power. She reveals that she is not a helpless victim but a powerhouse of ascetic energy (tejas) capable of incinerating Ravana instantly. She refrains from doing so for two specific reasons: first, she respects Rama’s agency and lacks his direct order (asandeshat) to take matters into her own hands (as it is his duty to rescue her); second, expending energy on a curse would diminish her accumulated tapas (ascetic merit). This asserts that Ravana survives not because he is strong, but because Sita is disciplined.

यह सुंदरकाण्ड के सबसे महत्वपूर्ण श्लोकों में से एक है। यहाँ सीता स्पष्ट करती हैं कि वह अबला नहीं हैं। उनके पास अपने पातिव्रत्य तेज से रावण को तत्काल भस्म करने की शक्ति है। वह रावण का वध इसलिए नहीं कर रहीं क्योंकि: १) 'असन्देशात्' - राम ने उन्हें ऐसा करने की आज्ञा नहीं दी है (राम का प्रण है कि वह स्वयं शत्रु का नाश करेंगे), और २) 'तपसश्चानुपालनात्' - शाप देने से संचित तप क्षीण हो जाता है। सीता जी अपनी शक्ति का परिचय देते हुए रावण को यह चेतावनी देती हैं कि उसका जीवन सीता की दया और धर्म-पालन पर टिका है, न कि उसकी अपनी शक्ति पर।
