सीताया वचनं श्रुत्वा रावणो राक्षसाधिपः ।
विवृत्य नयने क्रूरे जानकीमन्ववैक्षत ।

sītāyā vacanaṃ śrutvā rāvaṇo rākṣasādhipaḥ |
vivṛtya nayane krūre jānakīmanvavaikṣata ॥5-20-23॥
Translation
Hearing these words of Sita, Ravana, the Lord of Rakshasas, rolled his cruel eyes and looked upon Janaki.
हिंदी अनुवाद
सीता के ये वचन सुनकर, राक्षसों के राजा रावण ने अपनी क्रूर आँखों को घुमाते हुए जानकी (सीता) की ओर देखा।
English Commentary
This verse marks a shift in the narrative beat. Sita’s verbal assault has landed, and Ravana’s reaction is physical and menacing. The epithet Rakshasadhipa (Lord of Demons) is used to remind us of his dangerous nature. The action of rolling or widening his krure (cruel) eyes indicates that his lust is giving way to murderous rage. It sets the stage for the terrifying description of Ravana that follows, highlighting the danger Sita is in.

यहाँ से दृश्य का भाव बदलता है। अब तक सीता बोल रही थीं, अब रावण की प्रतिक्रिया शुरू होती है। सीता के सत्य और कठोर वचनों ने रावण के अहं को चोट पहुंचाई है। 'विवृत्य नयने' (आँखें घुमाकर/विस्तारित करके) देखना उसके बढ़ते हुए क्रोध और हिंसक प्रवृत्ति को दर्शाता है। वाल्मीकि जी उसे 'राक्षसाधिपः' कहते हैं, जो उसकी क्रूरता और शक्ति दोनों का स्मरण कराता है। यह शांति से क्रोध की ओर संक्रमण (transition) का क्षण है।
