नीलजीमूतसङ्काशो महाभुजशिरोधरः ।
सिंहसत्त्वगतिः श्रीमान्दीप्तजिह्वोग्रलोचनः ।

५.२०.२४।। ॥५-२०-२४॥
nīlajīmūtasaṅkāśo mahābhujaśirodharaḥ |
siṃhasattvagatiḥ śrīmāndīptajihvogralocanaḥ ॥5-20-24॥
Translation
He resembled a dark blue cloud, possessed mighty arms and neck, had the gait and strength of a lion, was majestic, and had a blazing tongue and fierce eyes.
हिंदी अनुवाद
(वह रावण) नीले बादल के समान आभा वाला, विशाल भुजाओं और गर्दन वाला, सिंह के समान बल और चाल वाला, कांतिमान, लपलपाती जीभ और भयानक आँखों वाला था।
English Commentary
Valmiki provides a vivid, almost cinematic description of Ravana. The imagery serves to magnify the threat he poses. He is not a grotesque monster in the weak sense, but a majestic, terrifying entity. Comparisons to a 'blue cloud' and a 'lion' suggest immense power and royalty. However, the details of the 'blazing tongue' and 'fierce eyes' betray his predatory intent. This duality—magnificence combined with terror—is characteristic of Ravana’s depiction in the epic.

वाल्मीकि रावण के स्वरूप का अद्भुत वर्णन करते हैं। यद्यपि रावण खलनायक है, परन्तु कवि उसके 'श्रीमान' (ऐश्वर्य/कांति) और 'महाभुज' (विशाल भुजाओं) होने को नहीं छिपाते। 'नीलजीमूत' (नीला मेघ) उसकी श्याम वर्ण की विशालता को दर्शाता है। उसकी चाल सिंह जैसी है। परन्तु 'दीप्तजिह्व' (लपलपाती/जलती हुई जीभ) और 'उग्रलोचन' (भयंकर आँखें) उसके राक्षसी और हिंसक रूप को भी स्पष्ट करते हैं। यह सौंदर्य और भय का मिश्रण (Bibhatsa and Raudra rasa) है।
