इत्युक्त्वा मैथिलीं राजा रावणः शत्रुरावणः ।
सन्दिदेश ततः सर्वा राक्षसीर्घोरदर्शनाः ।

ityuktvā maithilīṃ rājā rāvaṇaḥ śatrurāvaṇaḥ |
sandideśa tataḥ sarvā rākṣasīrghoradarśanāḥ ॥5-20-30॥
Translation
Having spoken thus to Maithili, King Ravana, who makes his enemies cry, then gave orders to all the terrible-looking Rakshasis (present there).

मैथिली (सीता) से ऐसा कहकर, शत्रुओं को रुलाने वाले राजा रावण ने वहां उपस्थित सभी भयंकर दिखने वाली राक्षसियों को आदेश दिया।
English Commentary
Valmiki uses the epithet Shatru-ravanah (he who makes enemies wail/cry) to remind us of Ravana's formidable reputation, juxtaposing it with his petty bullying of a captive woman. Accepting his inability to persuade Sita directly, he shifts tactics to psychological warfare. By commanding the ghora-darshanah (frightful looking) demonesses, he intends to create an atmosphere of terror. This marks the transition from direct confrontation to delegating the torture to his minions.

यहाँ रावण के लिए 'शत्रुरावणः' विशेषण का प्रयोग हुआ है, जिसका अर्थ है 'शत्रुओं को रुलाने वाला'। यह विडंबना है कि जो विश्व को रुलाता है, वह आज एक निहत्थी स्त्री के सामने अपनी शक्ति का प्रदर्शन कर रहा है। स्वयं असफल होने पर वह अब 'घोरदर्शनाः' (डरावनी दिखने वाली) राक्षसियों को आगे करता है। यह रावण की 'साम, दाम' नीति के विफल होने के बाद 'भेद' और 'दंड' नीति की शुरुआत है। वह सीता को मानसिक रूप से तोड़ने के लिए भय का वातावरण बना रहा है।
