यस्य सूर्यो न तपति भीतो यस्य च मारुतः ।
न वाति स्मायतापाङ्गे किं त्वं तस्य न तिष्ठसि ।

yasya sūryo na tapati bhīto yasya ca mārutaḥ |
na vāti smāyatāpāṅge kiṃ tvaṃ tasya na tiṣṭhasi ॥5-21-16॥
Translation
"O one with smiling side-glances, why do you not stay with him, of whom the sun does not burn and the wind does not blow out of fear?"

"हे मुस्कुराती आँखों वाली (सीता)! जिसके डर से सूर्य तपता नहीं है और वायु बहती नहीं है, तुम उसके (वश) में क्यों नहीं रहती?"
English Commentary
The Rakshasis invoke the forces of nature to illustrate Ravana's dominance. The Sun and Wind, usually uncontrollable elemental forces, curb their intensity in Ravana’s presence due to fear ('bhītaḥ'). This highlights the unnatural disruption Ravana brings to the cosmic order. The address 'smāyatāpāṅge' (O smiling-glanced one) seems incongruous with Sita's sorrowful state; it is likely a cajoling epithet used by the Rakshasis to urge her to smile and accept the proposal, suggesting that resistance against a being who commands the elements is futile.

यहाँ रावण के 'आतंक' का ब्रह्माण्डीय स्तर दिखाया गया है। प्रकृति के नियम (ऋत) भी रावण के भय से बदल जाते हैं—सूर्य अपनी तपन कम कर देता है और वायु अपनी गति। सीता के लिए 'स्मायतापाङ्गे' (मुस्कुराते हुए कटाक्ष वाली) सम्बोधन व्यंग्यात्मक या उनके स्वाभाविक नयन-सौन्दर्य का वर्णन हो सकता है, अथवा वे चाहती हैं कि सीता अपना शोक छोड़कर प्रसन्न हों। मुख्य भाव यह है कि जब अचेतन प्रकृति भी रावण से डरती है, तो सीता जैसी साधारण मानवी का विरोध करना व्यर्थ है।
