ततः सीतामुपागम्य राक्षस्यो विकृताननाः ।
परुषं परुषा नार्य ऊचुस्ता वाक्यमप्रियम् ।

tataḥ sītāmupāgamya rākṣasyo vikṛtānanāḥ |
paruṣaṃ paruṣā nārya ūcustā vākyamapriyam ॥5-22-1॥
Translation
"Then, approaching Sita, those Rakshasis of distorted faces, who were themselves harsh, spoke these harsh and unpleasant words."

तदनन्तर, विकृत मुख वाली उन कठोर राक्षसियों ने सीता के पास जाकर, निष्ठुरतापूर्वक ये अप्रिय वचन कहे।
English Commentary
Sarga 22 begins with a re-emphasis on the grotesque nature of the guards. They are 'vikṛtānanāḥ' (distorted-faced) and their speech is 'apriyam' (unpleasant/disagreeable). The repetition of the word 'paruṣa' (harsh/rough) for both the women and their speech underlines the total lack of compassion in the environment. The narrative focus shifts from Ravana's distant glory to the immediate, visceral horror of Sita's captivity surrounded by these monsters.

यह २२वें सर्ग का प्रारम्भ है। अब तक राक्षसियाँ रावण की महिमा गा रही थीं, अब वे सीता को सीधे प्रताड़ित करेंगी। 'विकृताननाः' (विकृत/डरावने मुख वाली) विशेषण उनके भयानक रूप को याद दिलाता है। 'परुषा' (कठोर स्वभाव वाली) नारियों द्वारा 'परुषं' (कठोर) और 'अप्रियम्' (कानों को न सुहाने वाले) वचन कहे जाना, वातावरण की क्रूरता को स्थापित करता है। यहाँ से मानसिक दबाव की तीव्रता और बढ़ जाती है।
