तां कृशां दीनवदनां मलिनाम्बरधारिणीम् ।
भर्त्सयां चक्रिरे भीमा राक्षस्यस्ताः समन्ततः ।

tāṃ kṛśāṃ dīnavadanāṃ malināmbaradhāriṇīm |
bhartsayāṃ cakrire bhīmā rākṣasyastāḥ samantataḥ ॥5-22-14॥
Translation
Those terrible Rakshasis, from all sides, began to threaten her who was emaciated, with a piteous face, and wearing soiled garments.

वह (सीता) जो कृश (दुर्बल) थीं, जिनका मुख उदास (दीन) था और जो मैले वस्त्र धारण किये थीं, उन्हें वे भयानक राक्षसियाँ चारों ओर से (घेरकर) धमकाने लगीं।
English Commentary
The physical description of Sita here serves as a badge of her chastity and suffering. She is 'kṛśām' (emaciated) from fasting, and wears 'malina' (soiled) clothes, having refused all luxury in Rama's absence. Her appearance is that of a strict ascetic. The cruelty of the Rakshasis is highlighted by their lack of empathy for her wretched condition; instead of pity, her vulnerability invites more abuse. This contrast between Sita’s physical weakness and the Rakshasis' brute aggression underscores the moral asymmetry of the scene.

यहाँ सीता के तपस्वी रूप का वर्णन है—'कृशाम्' (कमजोर/पतली), 'दीनवदनां' (मुरझाया हुआ चेहरा), और 'मलिनाम्बरधारिणीम्' (मैले वस्त्र पहनने वाली)। उन्होंने अलंकारों और प्रसाधनों का त्याग कर रखा है, जो उनके पतिवियोग और तपस्या का प्रतीक है। ऐसी दयनीय अवस्था में भी राक्षसियों को दया नहीं आती, बल्कि वे 'भर्त्सयां चक्रिरे' (धमकाने लगीं/निंदा करने लगीं)। यह श्लोक अत्याचार की पराकाष्ठा है—एक असहाय, शोकग्रस्त स्त्री पर समूह द्वारा आक्रमण। यह पाठक के मन में राक्षसी प्रवृत्ति के प्रति घृणा और सीता के प्रति सहानुभूति उत्पन्न करता है।
