ततः शूर्पणखा नाम राक्षसी वाक्यमब्रवीत् ।
अजामुख्या यदुक्तं हि तदेव मम रोचते ।
।
॥५-२२-४०॥
Tataḥ śūrpaṇakhā nāma rākṣasī vākyamabravīt । Ajāmukhyā yaduktaṃ hi tadeva mama rocate । । ॥5-22-40॥
Translation
Then a Rakshasi named Shurpanakha spoke these words: "I agree with exactly what Ajamukhi has said."
हिंदी अनुवाद
तब 'शूर्पणखा' नाम की राक्षसी ने यह वचन कहा—"अजामुखी ने जो कहा है, वही मुझे पसंद है (मैं उससे सहमत हूँ)।"
English Commentary
Another demoness, named Shurpanakha, voices her agreement. Whether this is Ravana’s sister or a namesake guard, the name itself evokes the root cause of the conflict. Her endorsement of Ajamukhi's cannibalistic plan illustrates the mob mentality encompassing Sita. There is no dissenting voice among them; the consensus to destroy Sita is unanimous, closing off any hope of mercy from her captors.

यहाँ एक और राक्षसी 'शूर्पणखा' का उल्लेख है। यद्यपि यह स्पष्ट नहीं है कि यह रावण की बहन है या कोई अन्य पहरेदार, लेकिन 'शूर्पणखा' नाम ही रामायण में विनाश का पर्याय है। उसका अजामुखी के नरभक्षी प्रस्ताव का समर्थन करना भीड़ की मानसिकता (Mob Mentality) को दर्शाता है। जब बुराई को समर्थन मिलता है, तो वह और अधिक प्रबल हो जाती है। सीता जी के चारों ओर सहमति का यह स्वर उनके भय को और बढ़ाता है।
