लोकप्रवादः सत्योऽयं पण्डितैः समुदाहृतः ।
अकाले दुर्लभो मृत्युः स्त्रिया वा पुरुषस्य वा ।
।
॥५-२३-१२॥
Lokapravādaḥ satyo'yaṃ paṇḍitaiḥ samudāhṛtaḥ |
Akāle durlabho mṛtyuḥ striyā vā puruṣasya vā ॥5-23-12॥
Translation
The popular saying cited by the wise is indeed true: "Death is difficult to find prematurely (before one's time), whether for a man or a woman."

विद्वानों द्वारा कही गई यह लोकोक्ति (कहावत) सत्य ही है कि "स्त्री हो या पुरुष, अकाल (समय से पहले) में मृत्यु का आना अत्यंत दुर्लभ है।"
English Commentary
This is one of the most philosophical verses in the Sundara Kanda, often quoted as a universal truth (Subhashita). Sita realizes that despite her extreme suffering and her desire for death as a release, she remains alive. She validates the ancient wisdom that death does not come before its appointed time (akala), regardless of gender or circumstance. This reflects the concept of destiny and fixed lifespan (ayu). It is a lament on the resilience of life; she feels cursed to live through this torture because her time has not yet come, highlighting the agony of unwanted survival.

यह रामायण का एक अत्यंत प्रसिद्ध श्लोक है जो जीवन और मृत्यु के दर्शन को प्रकट करता है। सीता जी यहाँ अपनी विवशता व्यक्त कर रही हैं। वे इतना कष्ट सह रही हैं कि मृत्यु उनके लिए मुक्ति समान होती, परन्तु वह चाहकर भी मर नहीं पा रही हैं। वह महसूस करती हैं कि जब तक आयु शेष है या जब तक प्रारब्ध में मृत्यु का समय निश्चित नहीं है, तब तक कितना भी कष्ट क्यों न हो, प्राण शरीर को नहीं छोड़ते। यह एक दार्शनिक स्वीकारोक्ति है कि जीवन और मृत्यु मनुष्य के हाथ में नहीं है, बल्कि यह नियति या काल के अधीन है।
