एषाल्पपुण्या कृपणा विनशिष्याम्यनाथवत् ।
समुद्रमध्ये नौ पूर्णा वायुवेगैरिवाहता ।

Eṣālpapuṇyā kṛpaṇā vinaśiṣyāmyanāthavat |
Samudramadhye nau pūrṇā vāyuvegairivāhatā ॥5-23-14॥
Translation
I, of little merit and wretched, shall perish like an orphan, just as a heavy boat sinks in the middle of the ocean when struck by violent winds.
हिंदी अनुवाद
मैं अल्प पुण्य वाली और अभागिन, समुद्र के बीच में वायु के वेग से टकराकर टूटने वाली भारी नौका की तरह, अनाथ होकर नष्ट हो जाऊँगी।
English Commentary
Sita expresses deep despair and resignation. She refers to herself as alpapunya (of little merit), attributing her current suffering to a lack of past good karma, forcing her to endure this separation. She uses the metaphor of a ship laden with cargo (purna nau) caught in a storm in the middle of the ocean. Just as such a ship, battered by high winds, sinks without a trace, she feels she will perish alone and unprotected (anathavat). The tragedy is heightened by the contrast: she is the wife of the powerful Rama, yet feels completely orphaned and rudderless in her captivity.
हिंदी टीका
सीता जी निराशा के गहरे सागर में डूबी हैं। वह स्वयं को 'अल्पपुण्या' (कम पुण्य वाली) कहती हैं। यह भारतीय कर्म सिद्धांत को दर्शाता है—वह मानती हैं कि यदि उनके पुण्य प्रबल होते, तो उन्हें यह दुख न देखना पड़ता। उन्होंने यहाँ एक बहुत ही सुंदर दृष्टांत दिया है: जैसे समुद्र के बीच में तूफान में फंसी हुई एक भारी नाव डूब जाती है, वैसे ही वह दुखों के सागर में डूब रही हैं। 'अनाथवत्' शब्द का प्रयोग हृदय विदारक है; त्रिलोक के स्वामी राम की पत्नी होते हुए भी वह आज स्वयं को अनाथ महसूस कर रही हैं क्योंकि राम वहाँ उपस्थित नहीं हैं।
