भर्तारं तमपश्यन्ती राक्षसीवशमागता ।
सीदामि खलु शोकेन कूलं तोयहतं यथा ।

Bhartāraṃ tamapaśyantī rākṣasīvaśamāgatā |
Sīdāmi khalu śokena kūlaṃ toyahataṃ yathā ॥5-23-15॥
Translation
Not seeing my husband and having fallen under the control of Rakshasis, I am indeed collapsing with grief, just as a riverbank collapses when struck by rushing water.
हिंदी अनुवाद
अपने पति को न देख पाने के कारण और राक्षसियों के वश में पड़ी होने के कारण, मैं शोक से उसी प्रकार कटती (नष्ट होती) जा रही हूँ, जैसे पानी के वेग से नदी का किनारा कट जाता है।
English Commentary
Sita vividly describes the eroding effect of grief on her being. She uses the simile of a riverbank (kulam) being washed away by the current (toyahatam). Just as the water relentlessly erodes the soil until the bank collapses, the relentless sorrow of not seeing Rama and the terror of the Rakshasis are eroding her life force. The word sidami indicates a sinking, declining, or wasting away. It conveys a sense of passive destruction; she is not fighting a battle she can win, but is slowly crumbling under the weight of her circumstances, powerless to stop the erosion of her spirit.

यहाँ सीता जी अपने क्षरण (deterioration) का वर्णन कर रही हैं। 'सीदामि' क्रिया का अर्थ है 'धंसना' या 'शिथिल होना'। वह कहती हैं कि उनका अस्तित्व धीरे-धीरे मिट रहा है। यहाँ प्रयुक्त उपमा अत्यंत सटीक है—नदी का किनारा जैसे पानी के लगातार प्रहार से नीचे से खोखला होकर गिर जाता है, वैसे ही निरंतर शोक सीता जी के जीवन को अंदर से खोखला कर रहा है। पति का दर्शन न होना ही वह 'पानी का वेग' है जो उन्हें काट रहा है। यह उपमा उनकी असहायता और धीरे-धीरे मृत्यु की ओर अग्रसर होने की स्थिति को दर्शाती है।
