धिगस्तु खलु मानुष्यं धिगस्तु परवश्यताम् ।
न शक्यं यत्परित्यक्तुमात्मच्छन्देन जीवितम् ।
।

Dhigastu khalu mānuṣyaṃ dhigastu paravaśyatām |
Na śakyaṃ yatparityaktumātmacchandena jīvitam ॥5-23-20॥
Translation
Fie upon human existence! Fie upon dependence! For it is not possible to abandon life by one's own will.
हिंदी अनुवाद
मनुष्य जन्म को धिक्कार है! और पराधीनता को भी धिक्कार है! जिसके कारण अपनी इच्छा से प्राणों का त्याग करना भी संभव नहीं है।
English Commentary
In a moment of existential frustration, Sita curses the human condition and the state of dependency (paravashyatam). She realizes the ultimate limitation of humanity: one is not even the master of one's own death. "Fie upon human existence" reflects her feeling that being human implies suffering without the power to end it. She feels shackled not just by the demons, but by the very laws of nature and destiny that prevent her from exiting this life at will (atmacchandena). It is a profound outcry against the lack of autonomy in human life.

यह श्लोक सीता जी की हताशा का चरम बिंदु है। वह मनुष्य जीवन को ही धिक्कारती हैं ('धिगस्तु मानुष्यं') क्योंकि देवताओं के विपरीत, मनुष्य बहुत दुर्बल और परिस्थितियों का दास होता है। उससे भी अधिक वह 'परवश्यता' (पराधीनता) को धिक्कारती हैं। यहाँ पराधीनता का अर्थ केवल कैद में होना नहीं है, बल्कि नियति और दैहिक सीमाओं के अधीन होना भी है। वह इस बात से क्षुब्ध हैं कि मनुष्य को जीवन तो मिलता है, लेकिन उसे अपनी इच्छा से समाप्त करने का अधिकार या शक्ति उसके पास नहीं है। यह मानव अस्तित्व की विवशता पर एक गहरा कटाक्ष है।
