प्रसक्ताश्रुमुखीत्येवं ब्रुवन्ती जनकात्मजा ।
अधोमुखमुखी बाला विलप्तुमुपचक्रमे ।

Prasaktāśrumukhītyevaṃ bruvantī janakātmajā |
Adhomukhamukhī bālā vilaptumupacakrame ॥5-24-1॥
Translation
With her face bathed in incessant tears, the daughter of Janaka, speaking thus, lowered her face and began to wail like a young girl.
हिंदी अनुवाद
निरंतर बहते हुए आंसुओं से भरे मुख वाली, जनकनन्दिनी सीता, इस प्रकार (पूर्व श्लोकों में वर्णित बातें) कहती हुई, मुख को नीचे की ओर करके एक बालिका की भाँति विलाप करने लगीं।
English Commentary
In this verse, Valmiki uses the word Bala (young girl) to describe Sita, invoking a sense of innocence and vulnerability. Despite being a queen and the daughter of the wise King Janaka (Janakatmaja), grief has reduced her to the state of a helpless child. Hanging her head low (adhomukhi) signifies deep dejection and the weight of her sorrow. The imagery of a tear-streaked face looking downward captures the universal language of defeat and hopelessness. It marks the transition from internal thought to the external physical expression of uncontrollable weeping.

यहाँ सीता जी के लिए 'बाला' शब्द का प्रयोग अत्यंत मार्मिक है। यद्यपि वे एक विवाहिता और महारानी हैं, किन्तु विपत्ति के इस क्षण में उनकी स्थिति एक असहाय बालिका जैसी हो गई है। 'अधोमुखमुखी' (नीचा मुख किए हुए) होना उनकी लज्जा, शोक और निराशा को दर्शाता है। वे अपने आंसुओं को रोकने में असमर्थ हैं। जनक जैसे महान ज्ञानी राजा की पुत्री ('जनकात्मजा') होने के बाद भी, आज परिस्थितियाँ उन्हें साधारण मनुष्य की भाँति रोने पर विवश कर रही हैं। यह श्लोक उनकी संवेदनशीलता और नाजुक स्थिति का चित्रण है।
