तस्या सा दीर्घविपुला वेपन्त्याः सीतया तदा ।
ददृशे कम्पिनी वेणी व्यालीव परिसर्पती ।

Tasyā sā dīrghavipulā vepantyāḥ sītayā tadā |
Dadṛśe kampinī veṇī vyālīva parisarpatī ॥5-23-9॥
Translation
At that time, as Sita trembled with fear, her long and thick braid appeared like a black serpent moving in a winding manner.
हिंदी अनुवाद
उस समय भय से कांपती हुई सीता जी की वह लंबी और घनी वेणी (चोटी) ऐसी प्रतीत हो रही थी, मानो कोई काली नागिन टेढ़ी-मेढ़ी चाल से चल रही हो।
English Commentary
In this verse, Valmiki uses a striking simile to convey the intensity of Sita’s terror. Having just been threatened by the Rakshasis, Sita is trembling physically. The movement is so violent that her long, thick braid shakes along with her body. The poet compares this moving braid to a serpent crawling on the ground. This imagery serves a dual purpose: it vividly describes the physical manifestation of her fear and contributes to the overall atmosphere of danger and dread surrounding her in the Ashoka Vatika. The comparison to a serpent suggests something writhing and distressed, mirroring Sita's internal and external state of agitation.

वाल्मीकि रामायण में उपमाओं का प्रयोग अत्यंत मार्मिक होता है। यहाँ सीता जी की शारीरिक स्थिति का वर्णन किया गया है। राक्षसियों की तर्जना से सीता जी इतनी भयभीत हैं कि उनका पूरा शरीर कांप रहा है। इस कंपन के कारण उनकी लंबी चोटी हिल रही है। कवि ने इस हिलती हुई चोटी की तुलना एक चलती हुई सर्पिणी (नागिन) से की है। यह उपमा दो बातों को दर्शाती है: एक तो सीता जी के भय की तीव्रता, और दूसरा, उस वातावरण की भयावहता। जिस प्रकार एक नागिन को देखकर भय उत्पन्न होता है, उसी प्रकार सीता जी की स्थिति अत्यंत संकटपूर्ण और डरावनी है। यह दृश्य पाठक के मन में करुणा और भय का मिश्रित भाव उत्पन्न करता है।
