राक्षसी वशमापन्ना भर्त्यमाना सुदारुणम् ।
चिन्तयन्ती सुदुःखार्ता नाहं जीवितुमुत्सहे ।

Rākṣasī vaśamāpannā bhartyamānā sudāruṇam |
Cintayantī suduḥkhārtā nāhaṃ jīvitumutsahe ॥5-24-4॥
Translation
Fallen under the control of Rakshasis, being threatened terribly, and grieving deeply while thinking (of Rama), I have no enthusiasm or desire to continue living.

राक्षसियों के वश में पड़ी हुई, अत्यंत कठोरता से डराई-धमकाई जाती हुई और (राम का) चिंतन करती हुई मैं, अत्यधिक दुखी हूँ और अब जीवित रहने का उत्साह नहीं रखती।
English Commentary
This verse outlines the three compounding factors of Sita's misery: imprisonment by demons (rakshasi vashamapanna), constant verbal abuse and threats (bhartyamana), and the internal sorrow of separation (chintayanti). The result is a total loss of the will to live (na ... jīvitumutsahe). It conveys a state of passive resignation. She is not just sad; she is drained of the vital force required to sustain life. It reflects the psychological torture she is undergoing, which is as damaging as any physical harm.

यहाँ सीता जी के अवसाद (depression) का चित्रण है। 'भर्त्यमाना' का अर्थ है बार-बार धमकाया जाना। राक्षसियाँ उन्हें खाने और मारने की धमकी दे रही हैं। इस भय के वातावरण में और राम के वियोग के चिंतन में, उनका 'जीविते उत्साह' (जीने की इच्छा) समाप्त हो गया है। जब मनुष्य के पास भविष्य की कोई आशा नहीं बचती और वर्तमान केवल भय से भरा होता है, तब जीने की चाह मिट जाती है। सीता जी यहाँ स्पष्ट करती हैं कि वह आत्महत्या नहीं करना चाहतीं, बस अब उनमें जीने की ऊर्जा शेष नहीं रही है।
