Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
दृश्यमाने भवेत्प्रीतः सौहृदं नास्त्यपश्यतः ।
नाशयन्ति कृतघ्रास्तु न रामो नाशयिष्यति ।

Dṛśyamāne bhavetprītaḥ sauhṛdaṃ nāstyapaśyataḥ |
Nāśayanti kṛtaghnāstu na rāmo nāśayiṣyati ॥5-24-41॥
Translation
Affection often exists when the beloved is seen, but friendship may fade when one is absent. However, only ungrateful people destroy love in absence; Rama is not ungrateful, so he will not destroy our love.
हिंदी अनुवाद
(अक्सर) सामने दिखने पर ही प्रेम रहता है, न दिखने पर सौहार्द (स्नेह) नहीं रहता। किन्तु (आंखों से ओझल होने पर) प्रेम को केवल कृतघ्न (एहसान फरामोश) लोग ही नष्ट करते हैं; श्रीराम तो कृतघ्न नहीं हैं, वे प्रेम को नष्ट नहीं करेंगे।
English Commentary
Sita engages in a debate with herself. She acknowledges a cynical truth about human nature: that love often fades with separation (sauhṛdaṃ nāstyapaśyataḥ). However, she immediately counters this by defining such behavior as kṛtaghnā (ungrateful). Since she knows Rama’s character is flawless, she deduces that he cannot be ungrateful. Therefore, despite the physical distance and time, he must still love her. This verse beautifully portrays her struggle to maintain faith in her husband's love amidst the psychological torture of isolation.
हिंदी टीका
इस श्लोक में सीता जी स्वयं अपनी शंका का समाधान करती हैं। पहले वे सामान्य मानवीय स्वभाव की बात करती हैं कि "आँख से ओझल, तो मन से ओझल।" लेकिन तुरंत ही वे अपने पति के चरित्र को याद करती हैं। वे कहती हैं कि केवल "कृतघ्न" लोग ही वियोग में प्रेम भूलते हैं। चूंकि श्रीराम धर्म के साक्षात स्वरूप हैं, वे कभी कृतघ्न नहीं हो सकते। यह सीता जी का "आत्म-संवाद" (self-dialogue) है, जहाँ वे नकारात्मक विचारों को श्रीराम के चरित्र-बल के आधार पर काट रही हैं। अंततः उनका विश्वास जीतता है कि श्रीराम ने उन्हें त्यागा नहीं है।
