किं नु मे न गुणाः के चित्किं वा भाग्य क्षयो हि मे ।
याहं सीता वरार्हेण हीना रामेण भामिनी ।
॥५-२४-४२॥
Kiṃ nu me na guṇāḥ ke citkiṃ vā bhāgya kṣayo hi me |
Yāhaṃ sītā varārheṇa hīnā rāmeṇa bhāminī ॥5-24-42॥
Translation
Do I possess no virtues anymore? Or has my fortune simply run out? That I, Sita, am now bereft of the most excellent Rama.
हिंदी अनुवाद
क्या मुझमें अब कोई गुण शेष नहीं रहे? या मेरा भाग्य ही फूट गया है? जो मैं, सीता, (जनकनन्दिनी) होकर भी उन सर्वश्रेष्ठ श्रीराम से रहित होकर यहाँ पड़ी हूँ।
English Commentary
Unable to find fault in Rama, Sita turns the scrutiny inward. She questions her own merit (guṇāḥ) and destiny (bhāgya). She wonders if a lack of virtue on her part is the reason for this separation. The phrase varārheṇa hīnā (bereft of the one deserving of the best) highlights her esteem for Rama. She feels that losing the company of such a perfect man must be a punishment for her own bad luck or shortcomings. It illustrates the depth of her introspection and the tendency of the distressed mind to blame itself.

जब सीता जी को श्रीराम में कोई दोष नहीं मिलता, तो वे दोष अपने भीतर ढूँढने लगती हैं। वे सोचती हैं कि शायद उनके गुणों में कमी आ गई है ("किं नु मे न गुणाः") या उनका पुण्य क्षीण हो गया है ("भाग्य क्षयो")। यह भारतीय नारी का सहज स्वभाव है जो विपत्ति के समय आत्म-विश्लेषण करती है। "वरार्हेण" का अर्थ है जो श्रेष्ठ वस्तुओं के योग्य हैं (श्रीराम)। सीता जी को लगता है कि श्रीराम जैसे श्रेष्ठ पति का सानिध्य खोना निश्चित रूप से उनके किसी दुर्भाग्य का परिणाम है। यह श्लोक उनकी विनम्रता और हताशा का मिश्रण है।
