अथ वा राक्षसेन्द्रेण रावणेन दुरात्मना ।
छद्मना घातितौ शूरौ भ्रातरौ रामलक्ष्मणौ ।

॥५-२४-४५॥
Atha vā rākṣasendreṇa rāvaṇena durātmanā |
Chadmanā ghātitau śūrau bhrātarau rāmalakṣmaṇau ॥5-24-45॥
Translation
Or perhaps, the brave brothers Rama and Lakshmana have been killed by deceit by the evil-souled King of Rakshasas, Ravana.

अथवा, यह भी हो सकता है कि उस दुरात्मा राक्षसराज रावण ने छल-कपट से उन दोनों शूरवीर भाइयों, राम और लक्ष्मण को मरवा डाला हो।
English Commentary
Sita faces the grim possibility of foul play. While she trusts Rama's valor, she distrusts Ravana entirely. She speculates that the "evil-souled" (durātmanā) Ravana might have had the brothers killed through chadmanā (deceit/trickery). This fear stems from her own experience of being abducted through deception. It acknowledges that in a war against adharma, rules are often broken by the enemy, and even the bravest heroes can fall to treachery. This thought plunges her further into hopelessness.

यह सीता जी की सबसे भयावह आशंका है। वे जानती हैं कि रावण "दुरात्मा" और कपटी है। वे यह भी जानती हैं कि युद्ध में श्रीराम को हराना असंभव है, लेकिन "छद्मना" (धोखे से) उन्हें हानि पहुँचाई जा सकती है (जैसे मारीच प्रसंग में हुआ था)। यह विचार आते ही उनका हृदय कांप उठता है। यदि रक्षक ही नहीं रहे, तो रक्षा की आशा कैसी? यह श्लोक असुरक्षा की चरम सीमा है जहाँ सीता जी को लगता है कि बुराई ने अच्छाई पर विजय प्राप्त कर ली है।
