Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
साहं त्यक्ता प्रियेणेह रामेण विदितात्मना ।
प्राणांस्त्यक्ष्यामि पापस्य रावणस्य गता वशम् ।

sāhaṃ tyaktā priyeṇeha rāmeṇa viditātmanā |
prāṇāṃstyakṣyāmi pāpasya rāvaṇasya gatā vaśam ॥5-24-49॥
Translation
Abandoned here by my beloved Rama, the knower of the Self, and having fallen under the control of the sinful Ravana, I shall give up my life.
हिंदी अनुवाद
आत्मज्ञानी प्रियतम श्री राम के द्वारा त्यागी हुई (सीध नहीं ली गई) और पापी रावण के वश में पड़ी हुई मैं अब अपने प्राणों का त्याग करूँगी।
English Commentary
This verse marks the nadir of Sita's despair. The epithet viditātmanā (knower of the Self/Supreme Spirit) used for Rama is poignant. Sita reasons that if Rama knows everything, he must know her plight; if he has not come, perhaps he has abandoned her. This logical deduction, fueled by the isolation in the Ashoka Vatika and Ravana’s threats, leads her to contemplate suicide. It highlights the psychological torture she is enduring. Being under the control (vaśam gatā) of a sinner is unbearable for her. The verse sets the stage for the extreme grief that immediately precedes the turning point of the epic (Hanuman’s intervention), showing the darkest hour before dawn.

यह श्लोक माता सीता की घोर निराशा की पराकाष्ठा को दर्शाता है। यहाँ 'विदितात्मना' (आत्मज्ञानी/महाज्ञानी) शब्द का प्रयोग श्री राम के लिए अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण है। सीता जी सोच रही हैं कि श्री राम सर्वज्ञ हैं, फिर भी वे उनकी सुध क्यों नहीं ले रहे? क्या उन्होंने सीता को त्याग दिया है? यह विचार उनके मन में रावण की दी हुई दो महीने की अवधि और लगातार मिल रही मृत्यु की धमकियों के कारण उत्पन्न हुआ है। पतिव्रता नारी के लिए शत्रु के वश में होना मृत्यु से भी बदतर है, इसीलिए वह प्राण त्याग को ही एकमात्र धर्मसम्मत मार्ग मान रही हैं। यह सीता जी के मानवीय स्वरूप और उनकी असहाय पीड़ा का मार्मिक चित्रण है।
