तथा तासां वदन्तीनां परुषं दारुणं बहु ।
राक्षसीनामसौम्यानां रुरोद जनकात्मजा ।

Translation
While those ungentle demonesses spoke many harsh and dreadful words, the daughter of Janaka wept.

उन क्रूर और भयानक दिखने वाली राक्षसियों के बहुत अधिक कठोर और डरावने वचन कहने पर जनकनन्दिनी सीता रोने लगीं।
English Commentary
Valmiki juxtaposes the crude nature of the rākṣasīs (described as asaumyānāṃ - ungentle/terrible) with the nobility of Sita, referred to as Janakātmajā (daughter of Janaka). The harsh (paruṣaṃ) and dreadful (dāruṇaṃ) verbal assault by the guards stands in stark contrast to Sita's refined upbringing. Her weeping is a natural response to the relentless psychological warfare she is subjected to. This verse transitions the narrative from Ravana's direct threats to the collective harassment by his servants, emphasizing that Sita has no respite from torment, whether from the king or his minions.

यहाँ महर्षि वाल्मीकि ने 'असौम्यानां' (सौम्यता से रहित/क्रूर) और 'जनकात्मजा' (जनक की पुत्री) के बीच विरोधाभास प्रस्तुत किया है। एक ओर राक्षसियों की क्रूरता और कर्कशता है, और दूसरी ओर विदेहराज जनक के उच्च कुल की संस्कारवान पुत्री की कोमलता है। सीता जी का रोना उनकी शारीरिक दुर्बलता का नहीं, बल्कि उस भयानक वातावरण में उनकी संवेदनशीलता का परिचायक है। रावण के जाने के बाद राक्षसियों ने जिस प्रकार उन्हें घेरा है, उससे उत्पन्न भय और मानसिक संताप यहाँ अश्रुधारा के रूप में फूट पड़ा है। यह श्लोक सर्ग 25 के आरम्भ में सीता की स्थिति की पृष्ठभूमि तैयार करता है।
