Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
एषा ऽल्पपुण्या कृपणा विनशिष्याम्यनाथवत् ।
समुद्रमध्ये नौः पूर्णा वायुवेगैरिवाहता ।

eṣā 'lpapuṇyā kṛpaṇā vinaśiṣyāmyanāthavat |
samudramadhye nauḥ pūrṇā vāyuvegairivāhatā ॥5-25-14॥
Translation
I, of little merit and wretched, shall perish like an orphan, just as a heavy ship sinks in the middle of the ocean when struck by violent winds.
हिंदी अनुवाद
मैं अल्प पुण्य वाली और भाग्यहीन हूँ, जो समुद्र के बीच में वायु के वेग से टकराकर टूटने वाली भारी नाव की तरह, अनाथ के समान नष्ट हो जाऊँगी।
English Commentary
Sita attributes her suffering to a lack of merit (alpapuṇyā), a common coping mechanism in Dharma to explain inexplicable suffering through Karma. The simile of a ship (nauḥ) loaded with cargo (pūrṇā) sinking in the ocean is powerful. The "cargo" implies her heavy burden of grief. Just as a ship bereft of a captain is lost in a storm, she feels anāthavat (like an orphan/ownerless) without Rama to steer her to safety. It illustrates her feeling of total abandonment and impending doom in the alien land of Lanka.

सीता जी यहाँ अत्यंत दीनता का अनुभव कर रही हैं। स्वयं को 'अल्पपुण्या' (कम पुण्य वाली) कहना उनकी विनम्रता और हताशा दोनों को दर्शाता है। वे मान रही हैं कि यदि उनके पुण्य प्रबल होते, तो यह दशा न होती। 'समुद्रमध्ये नौः' (सागर के बीच नाव) की उपमा बहुत सटीक है—वे लंका रूपी सागर में अकेली हैं, और रावण का भय व विरह रूपी तूफ़ान उन्हें डुबोने को तत्पर है। 'अनाथवत्' (जिसका कोई स्वामी न हो) शब्द हृदय विदारक है, क्योंकि त्रिलोक के स्वामी राम की पत्नी होते हुए भी वे आज अनाथ जैसा अनुभव कर रही हैं।
