न मानुषी राक्षसस्य भार्या भवितुमर्हति ।
कामं खादत मां सर्वा न करिष्यामि वो वचः ।

na mānuṣī rākṣasasya bhāryā bhavitumarhati |
kāmaṃ khādata māṃ sarvā na kariṣyāmi vo vacaḥ ॥5-25-3॥
Translation
A human woman cannot be the wife of a demon. Eat me, all of you, if you wish, but I shall not follow your command.
हिंदी अनुवाद
एक मानवी किसी राक्षस की पत्नी नहीं हो सकती। चाहे तुम सब मिलकर मुझे खा जाओ, परन्तु मैं तुम्हारा कहा (वचन) नहीं मानूँगी।
English Commentary
This is a definitive statement of defiance. Sita rejects the very premise of Ravana’s proposal based on the incompatibility of their orders—human and demon (mānuṣī vs rākṣasa). This represents the incompatibility of Dharma and Adharma. By inviting them to eat her (kāmaṃ khādata mām), she strips them of their power to threaten her. If she does not fear death, their leverage is gone. This verse encapsulates the essence of Sita’s chastity: it is not passive, but a fierce, active refusal to compromise her integrity, placing duty and righteousness above survival.

यह श्लोक सीता जी के पातिव्रत्य और धर्मनिष्ठा का उद्घोष है। उन्होंने स्पष्ट कर दिया कि मनुष्य और राक्षस का मिलन प्रकृति और धर्म के विरुद्ध है। "कामं खादत मां" (इच्छा हो तो मुझे खा लो) कहकर उन्होंने मृत्यु के भय को तुच्छ साबित कर दिया। यह वाक्य रावण और उसके अनुयायियों के प्रति उनकी पूर्ण अवहेलना को दर्शाता है। यहाँ सीता जी का चरित्र एक तपस्विनी की भाँति निखर कर आता है जो अपने सत्य के लिए प्राण देने को तत्पर है, किन्तु अधर्म से समझौता करने को नहीं। यह रामायण के श्रेष्ठतम संवादों में से एक है।
