सा त्वशोकस्य विपुलां शाखामालम्ब्य पुष्पिताम् ।
चिन्तयामास शोकेन भर्तारं भग्नमानसा ।

sā tvaśokasya vipulāṃ śākhāmālambya puṣpitām |
cintayāmāsa śokena bhartāraṃ bhagnamānasā ॥5-25-6॥
Translation
Holding onto a large blossoming branch of the Ashoka tree, she, broken-hearted and full of sorrow, thought of her husband.

अशोक वृक्ष की एक विशाल पुष्पित शाखा का सहारा लेकर, टूटे हुए मन वाली सीता शोक मग्न होकर अपने पति का चिन्तन करने लगीं।
English Commentary
There is a poetic irony here: Sita seeks support from the Ashoka (literally "sorrow-less") tree while being consumed by shoka (sorrow). Holding the blossoming branch grounds her physically while her mind is shattering (bhagnamānasā). The contrast between the flourishing, life-affirming tree and Sita's crumbling mental state is striking. Turning her thoughts to her husband (bhartāraṃ) is her only mental refuge. This act of holding the tree is also iconographic in traditional depictions of Sita in the Ashoka Vatika.

अशोक वृक्ष का नाम 'अशोक' (शोक रहित) होने पर भी सीता जी उसके नीचे 'शोकेन' (शोक से) युक्त हैं, यह एक विडंबना है। पुष्पित शाखा का सहारा लेना यह दर्शाता है कि उन्हें अब जड़ वस्तुओं से ही सहारे की अपेक्षा है, सजीव प्राणियों से नहीं। 'भग्नमानसा' (टूटे मन वाली) शब्द उनकी हताशा की गहराई को बताता है। वे अपने पति श्री राम का स्मरण कर रही हैं, जो उनके जीवन का एकमात्र आधार हैं। यह दृश्य करुणा रस से ओत-प्रोत है जहाँ प्रकृति तो खिली हुई (पुष्पित) है, किन्तु सीता कुम्हलाई हुई हैं।
