चरणेनापि सव्येन न स्पृशेयं निशाचरम् ।
रावणं किं पुनरहं कामयेयं विगर्हितम् ।
।

caraṇenāpi savyena na spṛśeyaṃ niśācaram |
rāvaṇaṃ kiṃ punarahaṃ kāmayeyaṃ vigarhitam ॥5-26-10॥
Translation
I would not touch the night-wanderer Ravana even with my left foot; how then could I ever desire that despicable one?
हिंदी अनुवाद
मैं उस निशाचर रावण को अपने बाएं पैर से भी नहीं छू सकती, फिर उस निंदनीय (दुष्ट) की कामना करना तो बहुत दूर की बात है।
English Commentary
This is a devastating insult to Ravana. In Indian ethos, touching someone with the foot is disrespectful; touching with the left foot (savyena caraṇena) is the ultimate expression of contempt. Sita declares that Ravana is unworthy even of being kicked by her. By asking rhetorical 'How could I desire him?', she dismisses his proposal as utterly absurd. She labels him vigarhitam (blameworthy/abominable), attacking his character and completely dismantling his ego and his delusions of being desirable.

यह वाल्मीकि रामायण के सबसे सशक्त श्लोकों में से एक है। भारतीय संस्कृति में 'बायां पैर' किसी को छूने के लिए सबसे अपमानजनक अंग माना जाता है। सीता जी कहती हैं कि रावण उनके लिए इतना तुच्छ है कि उसे पैर से छूना भी वे अपने पैर का अपमान मानती हैं। 'विगर्हितम्' (निंदित/घृणित) शब्द यह स्पष्ट करता है कि रावण का ऐश्वर्य उन्हें तनिक भी आकर्षित नहीं कर सकता क्योंकि उसका चरित्र घृणित है। यह सीता के स्वाभिमान और रावण के प्रति उनकी घृणा का चरम है।
