सा ऽहं कथं करिष्यामि तं विना प्रियदर्शनम् ।
रामं रक्तान्तनयनमपश्यन्ती सुदुःखिता ।

Sā 'haṃ kathaṃ kariṣyāmi taṃ vinā priyadarśanam |
Rāmaṃ raktāntanayanamapaśyantī suduḥkhitā ॥5-26-37॥
Translation
How shall I, that very person, act (survive) without him? I am extremely visible grieving, not seeing Rama, who is pleasant to look at and has red-cornered eyes.

वह मैं, उन प्रियदर्शन और लाल नेत्रों वाले श्रीराम के बिना कैसे जीवित रहूँगी? उन्हें न देख पाने के कारण मैं अत्यंत दुखी हूँ।
English Commentary
Sita shifts from the fear of death to the agony of separation (Viraha). The question katham karishyami can be interpreted as "How will I manage?" or "How can I exist?" without him. She focuses on Rama as priyadarshanam (pleasant to behold), contrasting the ugly and terrifying sights of Lanka with the soothing memory of Rama's face. The repetition of the description of his eyes (raktanta-nayanam) suggests a fixation on his features, a desperate attempt to hold onto his image in her mind. Her identity is so intertwined with him that not seeing him renders her su-dukhita (deeply sorrowful), a pain that rivals the threat of physical harm mentioned in the previous verse.

मृत्यु के भय से अधिक सीता जी को 'राम के बिना' होने का दुःख सता रहा है। 'सा अहं' (वही मैं) कहकर वे अपने पूर्व के सुखी जीवन और वर्तमान की दीनता की तुलना करती हैं। राम के लिए 'प्रियदर्शनम्' (जिन्हें देखना सुखकारी है) विशेषण का प्रयोग करके वे अपनी आँखों की प्यास व्यक्त करती हैं। उन्हें राम के रूप-सौंदर्य की स्मृति आ रही है। 'अपश्यन्ती' (न देखती हुई) शब्द उनकी विवशता बताता है। यहाँ 'कथं करिष्यामि' का अर्थ है "मैं कैसे निर्वाह करूँगी" या "मेरा क्या होगा"। यह श्लोक शुद्ध प्रेम और विरह (वियोग) की पराकाष्ठा है, जहाँ प्रेमी की अनुपस्थिति मृत्यु से भी अधिक कष्टदायी प्रतीत होती है।
