Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
दृश्यमाने भवेत् प्रीतिः सौहृदं नास्त्यपश्यतः ।
नाशयन्ति कृतघ्नास्तु न रामो नाशयिष्यति ।
।

Dṛśyamāne bhavet prītiḥ sauhṛdaṃ nāstyapaśyataḥ |
Nāśayanti kṛtaghnāstu na rāmo nāśayiṣyati ॥5-26-43॥
Translation
Affection exists when one is seen; friendship/love does not exist for one who is not seen (out of sight, out of mind). However, only ungrateful people destroy affection; Rama will never destroy it.
हिंदी अनुवाद
(प्रायः) जो दिखाई देता है उसी से प्रेम होता है, जो दिखाई नहीं देता उससे स्नेह नहीं रहता। किन्तु स्नेह को नष्ट तो कृतघ्न (एहसान फरामोश) लोग करते हैं; श्रीराम (स्नेह को) कभी नष्ट नहीं करेंगे।
English Commentary
Sita wrestles with the cynical adage "out of sight, out of mind." She acknowledges the general human tendency where priti (love/affection) fades when the object of love is no longer visible (apashyatah). However, she immediately recoils from applying this to Rama. She asserts that destroying love due to absence is the mark of krtaghna (ungrateful/treacherous people). She concludes with conviction: Na Ramo nashayishyati (Rama will not destroy [our love]). This verse shows her oscillating between worldly cynicism and her specific spiritual faith in Rama's noble character.

यहाँ सीता जी एक लोक-प्रसिद्ध कहावत का विश्लेषण करती हैं—'आँख ओझल, पहाड़ ओझल'। वे सोचती हैं कि क्या दूरी के कारण राम का प्रेम कम हो गया है? 'दृश्यमाने भवेत् प्रीतिः'—सामने रहने पर ही प्रीति रहती है। परन्तु तुरंत ही वे इस विचार का खंडन करती हैं। वे कहती हैं कि प्रेम को भूलना 'कृतघ्न' (उपकार न मानने वाले) लोगों का काम है। राम तो मर्यादा पुरुषोत्तम हैं, वे कृतघ्न नहीं हो सकते। इस श्लोक में सीता जी का राम के चरित्र पर विश्वास पुनः लौट आता है। वे अपने ही मन के संशयों से युद्ध कर रही हैं और राम की महानता को ढाल बनाकर उन संशयों को परास्त कर रही हैं।
