अथवा राक्षसेन्द्रेण रावणेन दुरात्मना ।
छद्मना सादितौ शूरौ भ्रातरौ रामलक्ष्मणौ ।

Athavā rākṣasendreṇa rāvaṇena durātmanā |
Chadmanā sāditau śūrau bhrātarau rāmalakṣmaṇau ॥5-26-47॥
Translation
Or perhaps, the two brave brothers Rama and Lakshmana have been destroyed (killed) through deceit by the evil-minded demon king Ravana.

अथवा (यह भी संभव है कि) उस दुरात्मा राक्षसराज रावण ने छल-कपट से उन दोनों वीर भाइयों, राम और लक्ष्मण को मार डाला हो।
English Commentary
Sita contemplates the worst-case scenario: treachery. She uses the word chadmana (by deceit/fraud). She knows Ravana is incapable of defeating Rama and Lakshmana in fair combat (hence she calls them shurau - heroes), but Ravana is a duratma (evil-souled) who respects no rules of war. The memory of the Golden Deer incident is likely fresh in her mind, reminding her that deception is Ravana's modus operandi. This fear—that they have been ambushed and killed via trickery—plunges her into deeper despair.

यह सीता जी का सबसे भयानक दुःस्वप्न है। वे जानती हैं कि रावण 'दुरात्मा' है और 'छद्म' (कपट) उसका मुख्य हथियार है। वे राम-लक्ष्मण को 'शूरौ' (वीर) मानती हैं, अर्थात वे धर्मयुद्ध में तो पराजित नहीं हो सकते, किन्तु छल से उन्हें हराया जा सकता है (जैसे मारीच प्रसंग में हुआ था)। 'सादितौ' का अर्थ है नष्ट कर देना या मार देना। सीता जी को डर है कि कहीं उनकी अनुपस्थिति में रावण ने कोई मायावी चाल चलकर उनका अंत न कर दिया हो। यह श्लोक असुरक्षा की उस भावना को दिखाता है जहाँ शत्रु की नीचता का कोई अंत नहीं दिखाई देता।
