Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अश्मसारमिदं नूनमथवाप्यजरामरम् ।
हृदयं मम येनेदं न दुःखेनावशीर्यते ।

aśmasāramidaṃ nūnamathavāpyajarāmaram |
hṛdayaṃ mama yenedaṃ na duḥkhenāvaśīryate ॥5-26-6॥
Translation
Surely, this heart of mine is made of iron/stone, or perhaps it is unaging and immortal, for it does not shatter despite this (immense) sorrow.
हिंदी अनुवाद
निश्चय ही मेरा यह हृदय पत्थर (या लोहे) का बना है, अथवा यह अजर-अमर है, जो इस (असीम) दुःख से भी टुकड़े-टुकड़े नहीं हो रहा है।
English Commentary
Sita expresses astonishment at her own biological durability. She posits that her heart must be made of aśmasāram (essence of stone/iron) or be ajarāmaram (immortal/undecaying) because logically, the intensity of her grief should have caused a cardiac arrest or physical rupture (avaśīryate). In poetic tradition, the heart of a lover is supposed to break in separation. By staying intact, her heart is ironically 'betraying' her desire for death. It highlights the cruelty of a body that survives when the spirit has collapsed.

यह एक मार्मिक आत्म-व्यंग्य है। साधारणतः हृदय 'कोमल' होता है, किन्तु सीता जी को आश्चर्य है कि इतना कष्ट सहकर भी उनका हृदय फट क्यों नहीं रहा। 'अश्मसारम्' का अर्थ है लोहे या पत्थर जैसा कठोर। वे अपनी सहनशक्ति को अपनी मज़बूती नहीं, बल्कि अपना दुर्भाग्य मानती हैं। यदि हृदय कोमल होता तो अब तक वियोग में फट गया होता और उन्हें मुक्ति मिल जाती। 'अजरामरम्' (जो कभी बूढ़ा न हो और न मरे) कहकर वे अपने कष्ट की चिरस्थायी प्रकृति की ओर संकेत कर रही हैं।
