रावणश्च मया दृष्टः क्षितौ तैलसमुक्षितः ।
रक्तवासाः पिबन् मत्तः करवीरकृतस्रजः ।

rāvaṇaśca mayā dṛṣṭaḥ kṣitau tailasamukṣitaḥ |
raktavāsāḥ piban mattaḥ karavīrakṛtasrajaḥ ॥5-27-22॥
Translation
"And I saw Ravana on the ground, drenched in oil, wearing red garments, drinking, intoxicated, and adorned with a garland of Karavira (Oleander) flowers."

"और मैंने रावण को पृथ्वी पर तेल से सराबोर, लाल वस्त्र पहने, (मदिरा) पीते हुए, मतवाला और कनेर (करवीर) के फूलों की माला पहने देखा।"
English Commentary
The imagery shifts radically to the grotesque and inauspicious (arishta). Every detail here signifies death according to Indian omenology. Being drenched in oil (tailasamukṣitaḥ) and wearing red (raktavāsāḥ) are signs of a person marked for death or execution. The Karavira (red oleander) garland is specifically associated with death rituals and victims to be sacrificed. Ravana's intoxication (mattaḥ) symbolizes his ignorance and loss of control right before his end.

अब स्वप्न का भयावह भाग आरम्भ होता है जो रावण के विनाश का संकेत है। भारतीय परंपरा में शरीर पर 'तेल' लगाना (अभ्यंग को छोड़कर) और 'लाल वस्त्र' पहनना मृत्यु के पूर्व के संकेत या तांत्रिक अभिचार माने जाते हैं। 'करवीर' (कनेर) के लाल फूल अक्सर शवयात्रा या श्मशान की क्रियाओं में प्रयुक्त होते हैं। रावण का 'पृथ्वी' (क्षितौ) पर होना उसके सिंहासन से पतन को दर्शाता है। यह 'रिष्ट' (मृत्यु सूचक) स्वप्न है।
