रथेन खरयुक्तेन रक्तमाल्यानुलेपनः ।
पिबंस्तैलं हसन् नृत्यन् भ्रान्तचित्ताकुलेन्द्रियः ।
गर्दभेन ययौ शीघ्रं दक्षिणां दिशमास्थितः ।

rathena kharayuktena raktamālyānulepanaḥ |
pibaṃstailaṃ hasan nṛtyan bhrāntacittākulendriyaḥ |
gardabhena yayau śīghraṃ dakṣiṇāṃ diśamāsthitaḥ ॥5-27-24॥
Translation
"Adorned with red garlands and unguents, riding a chariot yoked with donkeys, drinking oil, laughing and dancing with a confused mind and agitated senses, he went quickly towards the southern direction on a donkey."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"(वह) गधों से जुते हुए रथ पर सवार होकर, लाल माला और लेप लगाए, तेल पीता हुआ, हँसता और नाचता हुआ, भ्रमित चित्त और व्याकुल इन्द्रियों वाला होकर, गधे (वाहन) के द्वारा शीघ्रता से दक्षिण दिशा की ओर गया।"
English Commentary
This is the definitive image of the journey to the afterlife/hell. Riding a donkey-drawn chariot towards the South (dakṣiṇāṃ diśam) is the classic Vedic metaphor for dying and going to Yama's abode. His behavior—laughing, dancing, drinking oil—indicates bhrāntacitta (deluded mind). It portrays the grotesque absurdity of evil in its final moments—celebrating its own destruction. The contrast is sharp: Rama goes North (Life) on a divine vehicle; Ravana goes South (Death) on a donkey.

यह श्लोक रावण की 'मृत्यु यात्रा' का चित्रण है। गधे (खर/गर्दभ) अलक्ष्मी और अशुभता के वाहन हैं। दक्षिण दिशा (दक्षिणां दिशम्) यमराज (मृत्यु के देवता) का निवास है। रावण का 'हँसना और नाचना' (हसन् नृत्यन्) उस पागलपन (उन्माद) को दर्शाता है जो विनाश से पहले बुद्धि को ग्रस लेता है। तेल पीना और भ्रमित होना यह बताता है कि उसका अंतर्मन पूरी तरह अंधकार में डूब चुका है और वह मृत्यु की ओर स्वयं दौड़ रहा है।
